What is IPXX?
IPXX represents a protection grade for electronics housings. IP stands for Ingress Protection Rating and means the capability of an interface to protect
against liquid and solid particles.
As for the two digits after IPXX, the first one represents the protection grade against solid particles (ranging from 0 to 6); and the second digit refers to
the protection grade against liquid particles (ranging from 0 to 8). The higher the number is, the greater protection it offers.
How to differentiate the protection grade?
IPXX: indicating the protection grade of the housing.
This standard describes a system which classifies the protection grades of electrical device housings. Proposed by the European Committee for Electrotechnical
Standardization, the protection grades of electrical device housings are divided into a number of categories, which enable the protection grade of a product to
be determined quickly and easily according to different numbers.
The first digit
0: No protection;
1: Protection against the tips of solid particles with the diameter of 50 mm or more or protection with 50mm-diameter solid particles not to penetrate completely;
2: 1: Protection against the tips of solid particles with the diameter of 12.5mm or more or protection with 12.5mm-diameter solid particles not to penetrate completely;
3: Protection against the tips of solid particles with the diameter of 2.5mm or more or protection with 2.5mm-diameter solid particles not to penetrate completely;
4: Protection against the tips of the solid particles with the diameter of 1mm or more or protection with 1mm-diameter solid particles not to penetrate completely;
5: Protection against dust: Dust cannot be fully prevented from entering the shell but the incoming dust will not hamper the normal operation, nor will it lessen security
of the instrument;
6: Dust confinement: Dust cannot enter the object at all and the entire diameter cannot exceed the gap on the housing.
The second digit
0: No protection;
1: Protection against vertically falling water droplets - The vertically falling water droplets will not cause harmful effects;
2: Protection against vertical droplets when the housing is cocked up to 15° - No harmful effect will be caused from vertical droplets when any vertical side
of the housing is cocked at an angle up to 15°;
3: Protection against water fog - Fog spray at an angle up to 60°will not cause any harmful effect;
4: Protection against water splash - No harmful effect will be caused when water is splashed against the housing from any direction;
5: Protection against water spray - No harmful effect will be caused when water is sprayed against the housing from any direction;
6: Protection against strong water spray - No harmful effects will be caused when water is sprayed intensely against the housing from any direction;
7: Protection against short-term immersion - No harmful effect will be caused when the housing is temporarily immersed in the water to a depth of 1m at
normal temperature and pressure.
8: Protection against continuous immersion - No harmful effects will be caused when the housing is continuously immersed in water under the condition
harsher than that in grade 7 with agreement of both the manufacturer and the user.
SEEKRUN's requirements for protection grades
As an outdoor cycling product, e-bikes have high requirements for protection grades of their electronic components. SEEKRUN, as the developer of professional
e-bike displays, has realized modular and standardized designs for its products on the one hand and has met customers’ requirement for water resistance so
as to ensure IP66 or IP67 protection for the display body, the remote and the interconnecting parts.
SEEKRUN’s way to achieve IP67 protection
1.LSR Secondary Injection Moulding
LSR (liquid silicone rubber) is moulded in one piece by a secondary injection moulding process to ensure IP67 protection and to prevent loss of seal or misalignment.
For example, connectors between the display and the remote as well as the buttons are sealed with silicone rubber.
2. Seals / Gaskets
The seals or gaskets achieve IP67 protection by means of seal or gasket compression. For example, the button makes use of the pressed structure of an O-ring
and the Type-C interface is installed with a gasket to realize IP67 protection.
3. Press Gluing / Glue Filling
The IP67 protection grade is achieved by press gluing or glue filling to seal the housing. For example, after the connectors are installed in the display, the housing
is sealed by filling the AB glue; two housings are connected and sealed with the hot-melt glue, etc.
Established in 2020, SEEKRUN is a dynamic brand dedicated to the R&D, manufacturing, and sales of intelligent displays and accessories for E-bikes and Light E-vehicles.
